News of Miner's Castle Collapse/Cave in- 04-13-06

Miner's Castle is arguably one of the most noteable and noticeable of the sandstone formations in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. But because Miner's Castle is sandstone, it is subject to change brought on by nature's forces of wind, rain, and especially the freeze and thaw cycle that happens each winter and spring. Spring of 2006 saw an unexpected and sad transfiguration of Miner's Castle with the highest of the two turrets crumbling and sliding into Lake Superior. There reportedly were people in a boat nearby that witnessed the collapse, but thankfully they were uninjured by the falling rock. News spread quick throughout the local area in the Marquette and Munising papers, as well as local TV, and even around the Lake Superior region. The Miners Castle that has watched over the Great Lake of Superior for many years is down to one remaining turret. If you look closely, you can see a crack in this turret's foundation as well. Who knew that the naturally occuring change of a sandstone formation could bring about such a sad feeling in such a large number of people, including ourselves? Here are some photos of the Miner's Castle collapse before and after. We will be posting photos soon from the Miners Castle collapse viewed from out on Lake Superior.
