| Here are many photos of Presque Isle Park in Marquette. Presque Isle is a very special place to us. For those that live and Marquette and make it a habit to visit the park on a weekly basis, it's very easy to take this gem for granted. Presque Isle is surrounded by Lake Superior, has a view of the Upper Harbor Breakwall and Ore Dock on the east, and freighters can be seen rounding the breakwall. The coast then becomes very rugged with very tall cliffs as you head north. People are known to rock climb these cliffs. The view off the overlook of Lake Superior and Marquette is spectacular. On the north side of the island is where Lake Superior really pounds the shoreline during gales out of the northwest. Here, one can watch some of the highest waves found anywhere on the Lake, if you can brave the winds. On the west side of the island, the shoreline turns to an interesting congomerate with an occasional agate found. A popular place to watch sunsets is nicknamed, "Sunset Point" on the west side of the island. There is a bit of a sand beach here and it is a popular surf spot as well. From here you can see the peaks of Sugarloaf Mountain and Hogsback Mountain. It is a great place to watch a sunset. Thoughout the interior of Preque Isle are hiking trails and remnants of old growth forest, including white pine. There used to be resident albino deer,(a couple one year) but factors such as culling and harsh winters have taken their toll and one has not been seen in years. To be sure, Presque Isle is diverse in its geology and scenic beauty. | ||
