| Here are photos of surfing, windsurfing and surf kayaking on Lake Superior. You may not think of "surfers" and "Great Lakes" as possible. It is possible, but it takes a strong gale to build the waves and a knowledge of the shoreline for finding the best wave action. Don't think waves get big on Lake Superior? Remember the 1975 storm that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald, a freighter! Those waves were thought to be 30 feet+ generated by a storm that dropped in pressure to 28.88. Great Lakes surfing is most common in the Spring and Fall, when wound up low pressure systems are stronger, more frequent, and pass over the Upper Peninsula. Surfers surf the Great Lakes until the ice piles build up on the shore, and that didn't happen until late February this year. The surfers stay relatively warm with thick neoprene wetsuits; sometimes they are dressed warmer than the people taking pictures of them! |
